Mission Bowl

At our October 4, 2021 meeting MHNC Vice President Andrew Charlton made a presentation about the process of the Mission Hills Bowl reaching historic status.

The former Mission Hills Bowl is now occupied by Ross Dress for Less, located at 10430 Sepulveda Blvd, at the north end of the Olivo shopping center. According to the Los Angeles Conservancy, it  “embodies the space-age optimism and imagination of postwar Los Angeles…Most distinctive are its exposed steel beams with circular cutouts, which burst from the side of the brick building in a manner reminiscent of a rocket.” The style is known as Googie.

The structure began the process of historic designation when the shopping center was redesigned and now the historic designation process is almost complete. The public is invited to comment on the process either way by submitting a letter or attending a public meeting on October 7, 2021, 10am. The Mission Hills Bowl is item 7 on the Cultural Heritage Commission Agenda.
